“Torture porn” Part 1: Who started it?

Posted 16 May 2011 in FEATURES
Scene from Hostel with Scream Mask (Photoshopped!)

Many people blame Eli Roth’s Hostel or the Saw series for sparking the “torture porn” genre. But the damage was done by another … I don’t want to oversimplify, but something sinister happened in, and to, horror in the last decade or so. It began in 1996 with Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream.

Out of the frying pan, and into …

This is the new website for Fuck Yeah Horror, AKA FY Horror, AKA FYH. It started life as a lazily (and often drunkenly) updated Tumblr blog in 2009, quickly gained about 400+ followers and some industry interest, and then … stagnated.

South Park: watch ‘Ten Top Shockers’

The Guardian has covered South Park’s ‘201st’ Episode furore in various ways (eg No freak-out over South Park), but an addition to Ed PIlkington’s news article lists its Ten Top Shockers. (Despite getting four of the titles wrong. Yeah, I emailed them already.) This seems like a good excuse for a playlist, so here you can watch all of the Guardian’s top 10 shocking episodes.

RIP The Lost Boy – Corey Haim: 1971-2010

I am a huge Corey Haim fan. Have been ever since I saw him in Joel Schumacher’s cult classic The Lost Boys (1987) when I was eight years old. Haim’s hilarious portrayal of Jason Patric’s younger brother was, for me, one of the highlights. The witty banter and palpable chemistry between him and future frequent co-star Corey Feldman proved a massive hit with fans worldwide and helped contribute to Lost Boys’ fanboy status.

Christian Bale is body horror in the flesh

Christian Bale in The Machinist

Say what you like about Christian Bale, but you can’t argue with his commitment to a role. I haven’t seen shoulder muscles like that since Bruce Lee swinging his nunchaku about in Enter the Dragon. In fact, Christian Bale is a living lesson in “body” horror.

Sore experience: Watching five Saw films back-to-back

Saw III

Sore experience: Watching five Saw films back-to-back I’m too hungover to update, and everyone is geeking out to Steve Jobs announcing the iPad anyway. In lieu of a test card, have this link to an article I wrote on the Saw All-Nighter for the Guardian. Try to ignore my stupid fucking hair in the byline photo. It was 2008. Mistakes were made.

The Not-So-Many Faces of Freddy Krueger

Posted 18 Jan 2010 in FEATURES

With the upcoming A Nightmare On Elm Street remake to hit cinemas this spring (Friday 7 May 2010) I thought it would be interesting to ponder whether or not the “new” Freddy Krueger will be a success. For those of you who don’t know (anyone?), legendary Freddy actor Robert Englund will not be reprising the role he made his own when the original was released 26 years ago. Unlike fellow popular slasher franchises Friday The 13th, Halloween and A Texas Chainsaw Massacre (who have chopped, changed and rearranged the actors for their iconic villains more times than Jason, Michael and Leatherface have chopped, changed and rearranged their victim’s bodies) Englund has played antagonist Freddy Krueger in every A Nightmare...

Henry Hate’s Top 10 Rock’n'Roll Horror Movies

Posted 14 Jan 2010 in FEATURES

I’m writing this for a few reasons. One, I fucking love rock’n’roll. Second, I love horror films. Finally, a certain web site’s top 10 was, well, in satanic terms – fucking sacrilegious! Hell yeah I said it. Whose mother wrote that shit? Whoever it was didn’t do enough drugs or catch enough VD. Not very rock’n’roll. Come on – where’s the sex, where’s the drugs, where’s the frantic NO from your mom decreeing Thou Shall Not See This Movie?! They say the Devil has the best fucking tunes (well, I have fucked to most of them, at one time or another). So right here is my humble list of rock’n’roll movies you must see. And if you get the...

Saw VI flops, Paranormal Activity reigns!

Posted 13 Nov 2009 in FEATURES

OK, you’re probably wondering why there’s a pic of The Blair Witch Project slapped on a post discussing the poor box office performance of Saw VI … Here goes: Saw VI has been beaten to the no 1 slot in the US by low budget shaky-cam Blair Witch “rip-off” Paranormal Activity (I use the term “rip-off” loosely as horror purists swear that The Blair Witch stole the documentary film idea from the awful Cannibal Holocaust). The latest in the franchise, which has ruled the Halloween box office for the past five years earned a pathetic $14.1m. While some of you may be thinking that’s not a bad effort, it’s the worst performance from all six Saw movies so far in the US and UK! You just need to look at...
